Moonlight

Each and everyone of us has our own beliefs and concepts on a particular things around us-in our lives. Often times we are much consistent with our beliefs because we thought that what we believed is the right one. But then there are times wherein this concepts suddenly change because of some instances that brought to us to a new realization about life which is what happened to Abbe Marignan, the main character of the story moonlight written by Guy de Maupassant.

On the first part of the story Abbe Marignan was described as a tall thin priest, full of zeal, his soul always exalted but just. All beliefs were fixed, they never wavered. “ The why and the because always balanced out “ which simply shows that he is a logic person, he believes that everything happens for a reason. “ I am the servant of God, I should know his purposes and if I don’t, I should Devine them” he believes that he is a good servant of God, that he understood his God. He has a negative concept when it comes to women. For him women possess all the negativities. “ She was the temptress who has ensnared the first man – a weak creature, dangerous, curiously disturbing. He really hated women as he hates love. He believes that love is not associated with cristianity, that love is not worthy. He was exasperated by this need to love which always trembled in them.”

In the part of the story when he went out, he witnessed the beauty of the pale night, observed the surroundings and saw the young lovers, he arrived at a new realization in life. Those negative concepts and beliefs about women and love suddenly change. “Perhaps God has made such nights to veil the lover of men with ideal beauty.” He realized that love is a beautiful thing that God created. “ And fled distraught almost ashamed as if he had entered a temple where he had no right to be.” It’s a self realization that he is not only a good servant of God, that all his concepts on women and love are wrong.
This transformation of the character in the story is the usual one. It is just like in our real life situation wherein sometimes we thought that we are the best one, that we are right, we adhere to our beliefs but in the later part because of some things or instances that we encountered we arrive to new realization in life and there comes to a point that we are ashamed to ourselves because we find out that we are wrong.

A Poison Tree

The poem is all about a person that has anger with his friend but then he keep that anger. His anger grows but his actions towards his friend are contrary to what he feels. He shows good things to his friend and great deeds despite of his anger. His friend believe to what he shows until such time that he had the opportunity to revenge.
The poem entitled “A Poison Tree”, the title itself is a paradox because a poison is dangerous with represents death and tree represents life. And looking to the title of the poem, you will be able to know the content of the poem that it is all about something a pretentious thing, that you would think it would you something positive without knowing that it will bring you danger.
Looking to the structure of the poem, the rhyme scheme of the poem is AA, BB, CC and continuous rhyme scheme, which also shows the development of the poem that the content is not repeated thus, it is continuous , in other words, there is development. The poem is also contain four stanzas. In the first stanza the binary opposition is observed such as “ I told my wrath, my wrath did end” and “ I told it not, my wrath did grow”, which shows contradicting concept. The first stanza of the poem introduced the problem of the persona which is his wrath to his friend. In the second stanza, the persona tells to the readers about what he did to his wrath. He watered it with fears and tears, and tears and sunned it with smiles, which shows that instead of expressing his true feelings to his friend, he hide it and just show nice and good things to his friend.

The third stanza of the poem shows the effects of what he did of his actions, his friends believe his pretentious actions. In the fourth stanza of the poem the persona shows the ending of his problem he revenge to his friend when he had the opportunity.

The Cask of Amontillado

The Cask of Amontillado written by Edgar Allan Poe is a story which is all about a person who revenge to his enemy by killing him. The speaker in the story Montressor, killed his enemy Fortunato, by burying him alive to the niche and there Fortunato died.

In connection to the life of the author Edgar Allan Poe, he wrote the story because it is based on his experience. He was an army during that time when he found out the story behind the skeleton in the Catacomb. He found out that years ago, a duel happened between Lieutenant Massie and Captain Green which cause the death of the lieutenant . the friend of Lieutenant Massie revenged to Captain Green and what they did was to be friend Captain Green, intoxicated him and placed his body to one of the ancient dungeons and seal the captain up alive inside the windowless casemate an d there he brutally died.

The story is just like conceptualization of Edgar Allan Poe to the real event which happened years ago. Montressor in the story is referring to the Lieutenant Massie’s friend friend who killed Captain Green and Fortunato in the story is referring to the character of Captain Green who was buried alive.

The story was entitled “ The Cask of Amontillado” because the author preferred to use Amontillado or the wine as the center of the story, or where it is the story revolved because in real life, Edgar Allan Poe is alcoholic one. He prefers to write a story when he was drunk.

The Other Two
Feminist criticism is appropriate to use in analyzing the story entitled “ The Other Two” by Edith Warton, particularly psychoanalytic criticism because psychological factors of the character of the story is involved. The situation in the story is contrary to what is usually happening in the real life because in the real life usually men have their past relationships to other women but in the story the female character named Alice has her past relationships with other two men named Mr. Haskett and Mr. Varrick and patiently she is married to a man named Mr. Waythorn. Despite of the fact that she is married to Mr. Waythorn still, she is connected to her ex-husbands because of important matters which made Mr. Waythorn think that his relationship with Alice is complicated.
“She had the perfectly balanced nerves” this is a description of Mr. Waythorn to his wife Alice which shows that she admire her wife, despite of the complicated situation she is engaged and still she can manage all of these. “ She had a way of surmounting obstacles without seeming to be aware of them”, this is another description of Alice which shows that she possess this kind of fighting spirit, a confident women that supposedly men usually possess. The female character of the story influence the reader’s perception of the readers that females can also be dominant when it comes to relationship not only the men. Another thing in the story is that, it shows being “sex parasite” of female because Aliced experience relationships with three men which if will analyzed it commonly happened to men.
The story wants to show that women can also do what men can do. That women can be dominant not only in a relationship but also in manipulating other things in their lives.

Ku Turion si Kulakog

The selection entitled Ku Turion si Kulakog is all about an elementary boy named Bornok will undergo circumcision but he is afraid that something wrong which is fearful might happen to him. His friends told him that it is better to be circumcise by the elders but his parents prefer a doctor to circumcise him. In the end, he was circumcised by a doctor named Handi Ong.
In the story the main character named Bornok acts in way which is normal in his age. In the first part of the story when his father told him that he should be circumcised, his acts shows that he is afraid to undergo circumcision “ Biglang nagpundong magkaon si Bornok, nagdarakula pati si mga mata”. A boy in his age ofcourse will feel the same thing like what Bornok felt, that he is afraid to be circumcised . “tanu noy habu mo?gusto mong kuanon ka ni kulakog?” in this line Bornok’s father is threatening him that if he will not be circumcised, “Kulakog” an imaginary something monster-like creature will take him. After his father told him that lines, Bornok beacame more afraid that Kulakog will take him if he will not be circumcised. This part of the selection really happens in real life that in order for the parents to make their children obey them especially the young ones. They are threatening them that a monster will harm them, eat them or take them. “ Uda makadaog ki Kulakog, siya sana a oragon kaya ngane nagsunod n asana ko kina papa saka mama.” Simbag ni kooky, in this line kooky a friend of Burnok told him that it is better to be circumcised by Tsong Iyat, an elder than a doctor because if you undergo circumcision in a traditional way you are considered as powerful “uragon.” Which is what we Bicolano’s believing.
